Julie Sepulveda-Gibson

Nueva High School, Lamont - District V

Janet knoeppel, CCEA State President (right),  presented the 2004 State Teacher of the Year award to  Julie Sepulveda-Gibson at the 2004 CCEA State Conference in San Diego.

Julie not only teaches all levels of ELD, regular English classes, Theatre Arts, Art and Reading Literacy at Nueva High School, she is also the Title I and ELD Coordinator.  Her philosophy includes an uncompromising view that all students can learn and be successful.  She believes her job is to make school both enjoyable and exciting for her students so that they will look forward to coming to school each day.  She is a strong supporter of skills based and assessment driven curriculum.  Julie recognizes that in a small continuation high school one must wear many hats.  To this end, she has jumped right in and taken on many responsibilities to ensure the success of the Nueva students.  A student of hers states, “She makes it very easy for us to learn."  Julie inspires students to do well in school.  She has motivated students to try their best and not give up.

Principal Jim Caswell states that Julie’s early experiences have paid dividends at Nueva where today she manages to guide and control the youthful energies of her students.  Mr. Caswell summed up her qualifications well when he said, “This teacher is definitely among the Best of the Best in the teaching field in California.  I enjoy walking in and out of the classroom as students are taught the art of reading.  Through this teacher’s efforts, reading scores showed a gain of 1.3 grade levels last year.  Coming from Hispanic roots, Julie understands the pressures of our 90% Hispanic population and is an important role model for our students."
