Continuation Education in California

Continuation high schools have been in operation in the state since 1919 as a mandated alternative for students who need a more flexible school day or week and a program different from that of the traditional high school. The California Continuation Education Association (CCEA) represents the interest of the 500-plus continuation high schools in the state and the CBEDS census total of more than 70,000 students (about 10% of all secondary students) in those schools. If the students served is calculated on an annual cumulative total rather than a one-day census, these schools regularly serve more than 15% of all secondary students in the state. CCEA supports a program of instruction which is mandated for continuation high schools that has emphasis on occupational orientation or a work-study schedule, intensive guidance services to meet students' special needs, and a program that will lead to completion with a diploma.
