The Community Classroom was born out of a need to
go beyond career exploration/preparation classes offered at Argus High School.
Designed as a true school-to-career opportunity, students must make application to this
Honors class. Written application, two interviews and 100% staff approval are
required for acceptance into the program. Then, the student and Director, together,
determine the most suitable placement based on interest, knowledge and skills. Some
employers also require a personal interview before accepting the student. Once all
contracts and paper work are completed, the student begins a 6 week period of going to
work 4 hours a day, 4 days a week. No longer attending regular classes, the student
can focus 100% time and energy on the job, which includes a 1 hour meeting each week with
the Director to discuss work place issues. This program has increased student
awareness of employer expectations, given a boost to their self-esteem and created over 20
community partnerships for us! One student received a full scholarship to a four
year college as a direct result of this program. Others have been recognized within
the community and by the local media. Above all, their belief in themselves has
soared and they have found validation as worthwhile, contributing young people in their
community. The biggest bonus . . . many students have subsequently been hired, for
pay, by their employers!
