The School-to-Work Program at Leffingwell High School was created to better prepare our students for the working world.  Our students have the opportunity of interning with a professional in a chosen field of interest.  This hands-on educational program gives our students the opportunity to have realistic experiences in jobs of their interest.  We believe this approach is far more beneficial and valid than relying on paper-pencil interest inventories.  Students must go through a full process for employment reflecting a real life situation.  A student expresses an interest in a specific type of training position.  That student is then evaluated based on any minimum requirements stipulated by the business of interest.  A student meeting the minimum requirements is then allowed to start the formal application and interview process.  Once an internship position is assigned, the student spends a total of 40 hours at the assigned job site.  These hours are in addition to the regular school day.  The student reports directly to the business mentor at the assigned job location and is trained in a full range of skills.  While at work, the student interns have a real life opportunity to gain a greater understanding of how their academic subjects prepare them for the job.  They learn the vocabulary of the job and begin to understand the working environment as it is being experienced.  While at  school the staff strives to provide a cross-curricular team approach in all instructional areas.  Our goal is to integrate the varied subject matter and inter-relate the curriculum content to real life situations.  We feel our students need to understand the relationships between subjects and the relevancy to their own lives.
