For the past five years Mojave High School, in
conjunction with the Hesperia Pregnant Minor Program and the March of Dimes, has sponsored
a Babies and Youth Conference for pregnant and parenting teens and those who care about
them. Four hundred students from as far a Yucaipa, San Bernardino, and Barstow
converge at the Holiday Inn in Victorville for this event. High lights include: a
keynote address by Dr. Alexander Weir, who was himself a teen father, who talks about
young men taking responsibility for their actions. There is also a play about Fetal
Alcohol Syndrome presented by the local Safe and Sober Teen Theatre. Participants
are then able to attend two workshops of their choice. Topics include:
How to Find the Job You Want; Can't Wait for Prince Charming (Careers); Fun for You and
Babies Too (Children's Play Time); For Men Only (Male Responsibility); For Women Only
(Female Responsibility); Teen Health Issues; Domestic Violence/Anger Management; Coping
With the Baby Blues; Questions for a Midwife; Teen Parent Panel; Keeping Baby Safe; It's
the Law (Custody and Child Support Issues); Healthy Moms; Healthy Babies (Pre
Natal). The workshops are followed by a luncheon, a Mommy, Daddy and Me fashion
show, and a play on domestic violence and drugs. The conference, including lunch is
$3.00 for students and $15.00 ;for adults. It has become an exciting annual event in
the High Desert.
