The Community Service Learning component is a valuable piece of our school curriculum.  Community Service serves as a graduation requirement, as well as providing an opportunity for students to engage in a rich service learning experience beyond the walls of the school.  Students receive elective credit toward graduation as an added benefit to this program.  The school staff has noticed a significant increase in students' sense of responsibility and self-confidence, as a result of their involvement in this program.  They feel that discipline problems decrease, while attendance and student achievement increase as a result of this opportunity.  Being located in the close proximity to two local elementary schools provides an excellent laboratory for community service learning.  Elementary school staffs welcome our students as assistants in the classrooms, offices, lunch and PE areas.  Other examples of community service learning include local convalescent hospitals, service organizations, the district technology fair, UNICEF and the American Cancer Society.  Approximately 50% of our student body is involved in a variety of community service experiences throughout the school year.  We are very excited about this program and would encourage others to visit and model it to fit their individual school and community populations.
