SELF ESTEEM PROGRAM |
|
| The Jim Beckwourth High School self-esteem program consists of six components which can be activated separately, in combination, or as a total package. These components are: participation in high-impact activities, participation in appropriate support groups, availability of reward systems, development of a family-like atmosphere, participation in community service projects, and training to develop vocational skills. The program has evolved over the last fourteen years, as several educationally valuable programs became annual events, and were then consolidated in 1994. This program became a blueprint for the other schools in Plumas County as they developed their own self-esteem programs. The program is extended to all students at Jim Beckwourth. While the turnover is fairly rapid, the average number of students participating at any one time is between twenty and twenty-five, but the rate has been as high as seventy-five! Follow-up data indicates that the program has been responsible for dramatic life-altering changes for a number of students and the staff feels that this opportunity opens doors for greater academic success for most of the students. One of the recent measures of the success of the program was the participation of sixty-three continuation school students in the Plumas County Preventative Services Council during a two day "Healthy Choices" workshop. A recent addition to the program has been a three day ropes course. Students engage in fundraising activities to cover the $300 cost of participating in the three major events of this program: the three day ropes course; a three day educational field trip; and a three day back pack trip. The community provides donations for the reward programs, vocational opportunities and special family like activities. |
