The Community Classroom Program is designed to introduce students to various career opportunities available in the education field through placements at local elementary schools.  Students serve as bilingual tutors, classroom aides, recreation leaders, playground and lunch supervisors, and office clerks.  They also help elementary students in groups and one-on-one with lessons in basic skills such as math and reading.  The Community Classroom Program is a six week commitment to the elementary school.  Students report to the elementary school Tuesday through Friday for their entire school day.  On Monday the students report to DeWolf to attend regular classes and to meet with the program coordinator.  Program participants earn English and elective credit towards a high school diploma and receive valuable on-the-job work experience.  The program was developed to help students improve in job readiness, work ethic, promptness, responsibility and other employability skills.  The program was implemented in the 1993 - 94 school year after the Board approved an additional .60 FTE teacher coordinator and .25 FTE career technician, in return for the enrollment of 10 additional students at DeWolf.  The program currently serves approximately 30 students each year.  Many of the students have been asked to return to the elementary school following their six week placement in order to participate in other activities such as camps and field trips.  Some of the students have also been hired by the elementary schools as aides, following their high school graduation.  The students eagerly participate in this program and feel the awesome responsibility that goes along with being considered the "teacher."  This program has not only had a great influence on the lives of the students who have participated, it has also been a positive thing for the students and the school, as they have gained great respect from the community for their efforts.
