Up to 40% of the students and two teachers are directly involved in the construction technology which was begun at Leffingwell High School in 1995.  The students progress through a series of courses designed to reflect a real life construction project.  This includes safety, project planning, drafting, estimating, purchase order preparation, stock receiving materials, technical writing and the actual building of the project.  The goal is to integrate the varied subject matter and connect the curriculum content to real life construction situations.  Due to the curriculum integration, students have the opportunity to earn credits in the core subject areas, as well as electives.  Responsibilities and the difficulty of the course work increase as the students become more proficient.  Leffingwell students are proud of their contributions to the community which include a walkway at the local fire station and storage buildings at the local grammar school.   At their school site, projects have included a 2000 foot underground irrigation system, school landscaping, multiple fences, horseshoe pits, a sand volleyball court, a large storage building and numerous projects that are scheduled for construction in the near future.  The student pride which has grown out of this program has translated into higher self-esteem and a cleaner, graffiti free campus.  This course has created a win/win situation for the students and the community.  Students come to the job with skills and are then hired by local community contractors.  The local Contractor's Association has responded quite favorably to the Construction Technology Program.  They appreciate the opportunity to be involved in the education of the students who will be the future of their community.
