The Montecito High School ROP Landscape Construction Program has provided entry-level job training for students desiring skills in horticulture, landscape maintenance, landscape construction and landscape design for the last twelve years.  Instruction is delivered through the use of print material, computer technology, demonstration and hands-on experiences.  Montecito students have completely landscaped the campus as a result of this program.  They also provide 100% of the maintenance to the grounds.  Through the projects at the school, other district sites, private residences and community service projects, students have installed automatic sprinklers, planted lawns, trees, shrubs, groundcover and flowers.  Students have also designed and built decorative concrete planters, sidewalks, benches, tables, patios, school signs and almost anything one can imagine related to the coupling of landscaping and construction.  The students have also created a student garden which is extremely popular.  They plant in September and plow it under in June.  Each year they harvest fruits and vegetables throughout the school year.  They provide a portion of these fruits and vegetables to the Food Trades and Restaurant Management courses offered at Montecito.  This class is usually the first to close because of its enormous popularity.  Students learn great confidence in themselves and their abilities while providing wonderful public relations for the school.  They take great pride in their accomplishments and keep the school neat and orderly.  Vandalism is nearly non-existent at the school and this is very impressive, since its location is a part of the "inner-city" of Ramona.  A substantial number of students obtain employment as a direct result of their training and certificates earned through this program.  In addition, this program has become a strong motivational took to keep students academically focused and in school.
