| The Vocational Agriculture program was developed at Pershing High School in 1995. Having received the first continuation high school FFA charter in the State of California, the program was designed to become an ornamental horticulture FFA program that would promote personal and social responsibility. The goal was to have a program with high academic standards and real-life experiences as the norm rather than the exception. All Pershing High School students are enrolled in this program,. It is a hands-on program which connects students to real-life situations. The students landscape, design and create award-winning landscapes, complete with water falls, ponds and fish. The students learn planning, teamwork and communication skills by working as a team. Students use computer technology and specific software to create landscape plans, learn about floral identification, plant care, practical financial management and to explore related career opportunities. A state of the art greenhouse, guest speakers and competitions all serve to motivate and challenge the students. Students display their projects at the Big Fresno Fair Floral and Landscape exhibitions for judging. A winning entry will bring with it not only a ribbon, but also some monetary compensation for the student's efforts. As a result of this, many students are commissioned to design and create arrangements for special occasions or community events | ||
