BROOKSIDE SCHOOL
TUTORING PROGRAM SAN HEDRIN HIGH SCHOOL |
|
| The San Hedrin/Brookside School Tutoring Program is an intensive intervention model of reading instruction for Title I second grade students. The San Hedrin students provide 40 -60 minutes of tutoring four days a week. The San Hedrin students are trained in specific reading strategies, how to write progress reports and make contact with parents. This program received its impetus from the current San Hedrin principal who had been the Brookside principal. He saw a need for additional reading support at the primary grades, as well as an opportunity for continuation students to become mentors. The new Brookside principal was a former reading specialist who agreed to establish this cross-age tutoring program. Bilingual (Spanish) tutoring was added in 1997 - 98. Both programs continue to thrive with a total of 23 high school students and 23 second graders each year. The goal of this program is to ensure that all children will be at the average reading level of their class by the end of second grade. For the second graders, the average growth over a 10 week period was 11 levels (from level 4 , pre-primmer, to level 15.5, beginning 2nd grade). Some of the most positive outcomes for the San Hedrin students who have persevered for 3 months or more in the tutoring have included: they felt like contributors in the commuity; they gained reading basics to assist with their own children's education; they earned credits toward graduation (English); they developed career awareness; they learned entry level skills as instructional aides; and they learned appropriate behavior dealing with authority figures on another school campus. San Hedrin has celebrated the tutors successes in a variety of ways including awards, news articles, assemblies and photo sessions. |
