| Developed in 1997 as a result of the staff's consensus that students needed a career path which led to a job with a good future and decent wages, the Health Occupation Program was the result. The program consists of a four period block, lasting eight weeks. Students attend Anatomy/Physiology, Medical Math, Business - Medical English and Career Exploration (in the health field) four days each week. Fridays are for make-up, although more than three absences and they are no longer allowed to remain in the program. Upon successful completion of the class work, the students move to the job shadowing program at David Grant Medical Center where they can learn about not only medical, but also dental and veterinary jobs. Those who successfully complete the program receive a certificate detailing the job skills they have acquired. Each year 25 students are accepted into the program from the field of applicants. In a post-program evaluation, the indication was that this program was responsible for students choosing to further their education once they left high school. After the first year, 16 of the original 25 students completed the rigorous academic and attendance requirements. They had become skilled and empowered to continue their education. They had developed excellent work habits and attitudes. They had learned to problem solve in groups. They had a new and enthusiastic attitude toward learning and their futures. They saw where they, too, could prosper in our economy. | ||
