The Business Education program at Sierra High School was begun in 1993 to provide a state mandated career/business emphasis for the students.  The goal is to offer every student an opportunity to explore and consider a number of viable career fields, and to understand the pathways that lead to those careers.  This class offers students the opportunity to enhance their keyboarding skills, learn applications such as Microsoft Office, File Maker Pro and Page Maker, learn to fill out job applications, write resumes and business letters and practice interviewing skills.  Guest speakers are invited to come in once a week to talk about specific careers and educational opportunities.   Audience members are free to ask questions, solicit advice and eliminate preconceived ideas and beliefs.  Many students acknowledge that a guest speaker has been responsible for piquing their interest in a particular career field.  The class, itself, functions as a lab.  After an initial training period, all students work on "real world assignments" on a continuing basis.  Students work in the office, the library and classrooms (both at Sierra High School and in the elementary school next door).  They also produce the school newspaper, parent newsletters, advertise and operate the Business Class Print Business, type for teachers and students, process bulk mail for local charities, call parents with special announcements and prepare income tax returns for students, parents and some staff members.  Students can also earn Work Experience Education (WEE) credit for volunteering and/or working after school.  Each year there are approximately 200 students who participate in some component of this program and the evaluation feedback is excellent!  The program teaches students not only vocational skills, but also a sense of responsibility, teamwork, leadership skills and self-confidence earned by organizing and completing tasks by designated deadlines.
