The Character and Work Ethic Preparedness Education program was developed in July, 1996, following a staff member's attendance at a Character Education Partnership Conference.  The Work Ethic portion was added in order to increase focus on the school-to-work issues which are a component to Somerset's mission and vision.  The Somerset staff select various character traits upon which to focus.  Each month a new trait is emphasized with an individual from the past or present who has demonstrated the current monthly trait being chosen as exemplar.  Pictures of the exemplar, motivational quotes and posters are displayed in the classrooms, offices and other locations on campus.  Brief biographical sketches of the exemplars are prepared for each teacher to share with students.  Teachers are provided with lists of videos, movies, short stories, poems and dramas featuring the monthly trait which may be used to integrate the trait into their own curriculum.  Twice a month schoolwide lessons are presented involving the entire student body.  These lesson vary throughout the year.  Of particular enjoyment by teachers and students, alike, is the solving of dilemma in small groups.  These dilemmas feature the need to make a decision; not necessarily right versus wrong, but rather right versus right!  One of the major impacts is the increased awareness on the part of the students of the difficulties awaiting them in the "real world."  There is also an increased willingness on the part of students to work together to reach consensus and make decisions cooperatively.  The School Site Council has created a $2500 budget to cover the costs related to the program.
