Reality Graphix at Robertson High School is project based, technology driven enterprise that forces students to think creatively and to market their skills. Students run a small business that provides graphic arts services to the community while acquiring a variety of employable skills. Projects include plaques, awards, name plates, promotional hats, tee- shirts, pen sets, mouse pads and a variety of recognition products.

In 1994 two Robertson teachers observed a need for an "on-site" vocational education program focusing on the core skill areas identified in the 1993 Department of Labor's SCANS report. A concept was developed to create a course of study that involved the use of technology, explored the principles of managing a small business and allowed students to develop marketable skills. An Awards & Recognition business was considered an ideal model due to the simplicity of the manufacturing process, high school interest, existing hardware and manageable startup costs. Local material vendors were approached and training was proved.

Approximately 30-40 students are actively involved in Reality Grapix each year. The project exists within the context of our traditional computer technology course, thus exposing additional students to the activities of the program. Students acquire skills in the use of technology, communication skills (both verbal and written) thinking skills (reasoning, decision making, problem solving) and acquire positive personal qualities (responsibility, self-esteem, self-management and pride in workmanship).

Reality Grapix has generated high student interest, a large customer base, good public relations for the school and community grants for additional hardware. The program is now completely self funding. An average of 300 plaques are manufactured each year, including many for CCEA and ACSA.

Reality Graphix started in January 1995 with a loan of $1,000.00 that was repaid in June 1995. The recommended start up costs would vary between $2,000.00 to $6,000.00 depending on the depth of your initial business.  Reality Graphix is an elective class that exist as a component of the computer science program within the Vocational Education Department of Robertson High School.
