Well we have good news and bad news regarding legislation!

The bad news is that AB 927 was placed on suspense and is being held in the appropriations committee until next year.  That means that it is not dead, but because there is no money this year, it is not being considered any further at the present time.  We can revive it for next year's legislative agenda if we choose to do so.
The good news is that thanks to the hard work and dedication of Peter Birdsall and Theresa Inslee, the Senate has agreed to the idea of including continuation high schools in the low performing schools bills sponsored by
Senator Vasconcellos.  His bills are SB 508 and SB 466.  Peter has been working with Senator Burton's office and Senator Vasconcellos' staff on this. There is no language yet, but there will be soon and we will let you know
what that is.

The Educational Coalition (CTA, PTA, CSBA, ACSA, CFT) are working with Assembly Members Firebaugh and Diaz on AB 481 to have continuation schools included in this bill, also.  Assembly Member Goldberg is also excited about getting us included in the low performing schools legislation.  We will keep
you posted further on this.

The bottom line is that continuation schools will be eligible for money from the low performing schools bills once they pass and are signed by the Governor.  While it is never an easy road to get legislation signed, this legislation looks to have a reasonably good chance of getting that all important signature from the Governor.  Keep your fingers crossed and keep that communication going.  Thanks for all your help!

Janet Knoeppel
State President
