We are pleased to report that Assembly Member Tom Calderon (D-Montebello) has agreed to be the author of the CCEA sponsored legislation. Assembly Member Calderon is a member of the Assembly Education Committee and is Chair of the Assembly Select Committee on School Funding Reform.

In reviewing the computer printout of school districts with particularly low revenue limit add-ons, it was clear that school districts in Assembly Member Calderon’s legislative district are severely disadvantaged by the current formula. Our proposal addresses three major concerns of Assembly Member Calderon:

1) Support high school students who need additional assistance to graduate from high school.

2) Equity in school funding.

3) Support for the school districts within his legislative district.

We strongly urge you to send letters to Assembly Member Calderon thanking him for agreeing to carry this legislation. We also urge that continuation educators in his legislative area call or write his office and thank him for his support. Assembly Member Calderon’s district includes the following major communities: Los Nietos, Montebello, Norwalk, Pico Rivera, Santa Fe Springs, South El Monte, Whittier, and South Whittier.

When the language is returned from Legislative Counsel, we will likely take several days to review and possibly revise language and seek legislative co-authors. Thus, we would expect the bill to actually be introduced with a bill number in mid February. The deadline for new bills to be introduced is Friday, February 25.
